“Your Own”: Shivraj Singh Cites Jyotiraditya Scindia To Target Kamal Nath

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday took aim at his successor Kamal Nath over the Congress government’s election promise of farm loan waivers, referring to a statement by the latter’s party colleague Jyotiraditya Scindia. “Not Shivraj, nor the public, now your own people are showing you the mirror and telling you loans have not been waived off, Kamal Nath ji! Will your government not wake up even now? Tears have dried up in farmers’ eyes but they have not received any money in their bank accounts! If you have any shame left then you must take a decision on loan waivers soon,” Mr Chouhan tweeted in Hindi.

His tweet quoted a statement by Mr Scindia in which he said, “The farm loan waiver for farmers has not been done in totality. Loan of only Rs. 50,000 has been waived off even when we had said that loan up to Rs. 2 Lakh will be waived off. Farm loan up to Rs. 2 Lakh should be waived off.”

Resentment among farmers had helped the Congress oust the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, albeit with a wafer-thin majority in state elections last year. The promise to waive off farm loans was a headline point in the Congress manifesto. At an expense of about Rs. 50,000 crore to the taxpayer, the Congress had said it would waive off loans up to Rs. 2 lakh. However, the programme has been criticised for patchy implementation. The loan waiver scheme is not the first point to earn Mr Scindia’s disapproval. Last month, he had objected to a survey by the Madhya Pradesh government to assess crop loss due to rain and flood in parts of the state.

His unhappiness with the party leadership was apparent when was quoted by news agency PTI on Thursday saying, “It is true that the Congress is in dire need of introspection. The party’s situation should be assessed and improved, that’s the need of the hour.”

A close associate of Rahul Gandhi, Mr Scindia had been waiting for a seemly post since the assembly elections. Failing to make it to the post of the Chief Minister or his deputy, he aimed for the post of the state party chief. But given Kamal Nath’s skill of keeping the faction-ridden party together and delivering a victory, he was asked to handle both jobs.  Refuting any “issue” with Mr Scindia, Kamal Nath said earlier this month that he is “very open to the idea” of the 47-year-old heading the party, as he feels “burdened”.

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his supporters, social activist Medha Patkar who is leading the Narmada Bachao Andolan has said that PM Modi’s birthday celebrations overshadowed the grief of those affected by the Sardar Sarovar Dam project. Ms Patkar has alleged that around 192 villages in three districts of Madhya Pradesh — Dhar, Barwani and Alirajpur — were marooned after the Gujarat government raised the water level of the Sardar Sarovar Dam to 138.68 metres. “Prime Minister Modi’s birthday has been celebrated like a festival, but the affected people are yet to be rehabilitated. The water level in the dam was raised ahead of its schedule as Modi’s birthday falls on September 17,” Ms Patkar told IANS on Tuesday. Ms Patkar has alleged that the people affected by the dam have not been compensated despite the Supreme Court’s direction. She said that the Madhya Pradesh government has claimed that it is yet to receive the compensation amount of Rs. 1,857 crore from the Gujarat government. Ms Patkar blamed the previous Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for the problems of those affected by the dam. “Shivraj government claimed to have completed the rehabilitation programme and submitted a zero-balance affidavit which is not correct. This way they have snatched away the rightful that belonged to the affected families,” she said.

“Don’t Think Jyotiraditya Scindia’s Angry”: Kamal Nath On Fight Over Post……

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, in Delhi for a meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, today denied any trouble with Jyotiraditya Scindia amid reports of a tussle over who will lead the Congress in the state. “I don’t think Jyotiraditya Scindia is unhappy,” Kamal Nath, who is currently state Congress chief, told reporters after his meeting with Sonia Gandhi at her home. He said discussions focused on the organization in Madhya Pradesh and the fact that a new state chief must be appointed after the Lok Sabha elections. “I have said this repeatedly and I brought this up again,” said the Chief Minister. Asked about a report that Mr Scindia had threatened to “look for other options” if he wasn’t given the top job, Kamal Nath replied, “I don’t think it’s right and I don’t think he is angry with anyone.” Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said names were discussed for a new chief but it was decided that a wider consultation would take place. “I am ready to work with anyone appointed,” he said. Speculation about Mr Scindia’s resentment has been fueled by his recent comments in support of the government’s decision to end special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370. On record, he has said there is “no question” of leaving the party. But a group of his supporters have gone public with a threat to quit the Congress if he is not made state chief. “If Jyotiraditya Scindia is kept away from state politics, then I, along with 500 people, will resign from the party,” said Congress leader Ashok Dangi in a press statement. Mr Scindia has reportedly been angling for the job ever since the Congress won the Madhya Pradesh election in December and Kamal Nath took over as Chief Minister.
